basketball
for some reason, why… i have no idea, but i got to thinking about high school basketball just a minute ago. i was pretty good… at keeping the second seat from the end of the bench warm. i played with some very good players, many of whom went off to kick some butt playing in college. where are they now? not playing basketball, i’m sure.
aside from playing second seat from the end on the varsity team, i got to play jv ball - which was much more fun (maybe because i actually got to play). my sole purpose while playing in the jv games was to get my friend, breton the ball. he good and should’ve gotten more time than he did… but he didn’t need passes from me. he made stuff happen and did dang good.
best part of the story…
remember the movie rudy? the dude busted his butt through practice - after earning a walk on spot on the notre dame practice team - and showed up every day for 4 years. in the last game he played, his team got the coach to let him dress out. the team, and the crowd, started chanting his name… finally, the coach let him in for a few seconds. that’s what it took for me to get any playing time during the varsity games… the crowd, led by one of my best friends on this earth (lon), would start chanting my name with about 2 minutes or less in every home game we played - if we were in the lead. basketball was a big deal at ghs, i stopped playing after my junior year and they went to the state championships - and lost - my senior year. that being said, it had to be a BIG lead before they’d throw me in. it was awesome! even more awesome, i never scored a point in a varsity game…
